Patio Installation in Toronto & the GTA
Custom-designed outdoor living spaces built to withstand Ontario's four seasons.
A well-designed patio transforms your backyard into functional outdoor living space — extending your home's usable square footage and adding value to your property in the competitive GTA real estate market. Toronto-area homeowners have unique considerations when planning a patio: Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles demand proper base preparation and drainage, local bylaws set specific requirements for lot coverage and setbacks, and the short construction season between April and November means timing matters. Whether you envision a natural flagstone retreat in Rosedale, a sleek poured concrete entertaining area in Vaughan, or a classic interlocking paver patio in Oakville, the materials and techniques must account for our climate. Buildoreno designs and installs custom patios across the Greater Toronto Area using natural stone, interlocking pavers, poured concrete, and porcelain pavers — each with engineered base systems that prevent the heaving and settling that plagues improperly installed patios in our climate.

How We Work
Design Consultation
We visit your property to assess grading, drainage, access, and utilities. Together we develop a design that fits your lifestyle, budget, and the architectural character of your home.
Site Preparation & Excavation
We excavate to the required depth (typically 10–12 inches for GTA clay soils), establish proper grading for drainage away from your foundation, and compact the native subgrade.
Base Installation
Multiple layers of granular base material are installed and compacted in lifts. This engineered base is what prevents frost heaving — it's the most critical step and where budget shortcuts cause problems.
Material Installation
Your chosen patio material is installed per manufacturer specifications: pavers are laid on screeded bedding sand, natural stone is set on mortar or compacted screenings, and concrete is poured and finished.
Finishing & Cleanup
Joint sand or polymeric sand is applied, edges are secured with restraints, and the entire patio is compacted. We clean the property and review care instructions with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Interlocking pavers and natural flagstone perform best in GTA conditions because they flex with freeze-thaw movement rather than cracking. Poured concrete requires control joints to manage cracking. All materials work well when installed on a properly engineered base — the base matters more than the surface material.
In most cases, a standard ground-level patio does not require a building permit in Toronto or surrounding GTA municipalities. However, raised patios, patios with roofed structures, and patios that exceed lot coverage limits may require permits. We verify requirements with your municipality before starting.
Most residential patios take 3–7 days from excavation to completion, depending on size and complexity. Larger projects with retaining walls, steps, or built-in features may take 2–3 weeks. Weather delays are factored into our scheduling.
The ideal window is May through October when ground conditions are optimal. Spring installations let you enjoy the patio all summer. Fall installations are often available at competitive pricing. We do not install patios when the ground is frozen.
Annual maintenance includes polymeric sand top-up, weed prevention, and pressure washing. We recommend sealing natural stone every 2–3 years. Interlocking pavers should have polymeric sand refreshed every 3–5 years. Proper maintenance keeps your patio looking new for decades.
