Interlocking Pavers in Toronto & the GTA
Driveways, walkways, and patios built with precision-engineered interlocking pavers.
Interlocking concrete pavers are the most versatile and durable hardscape material available to GTA homeowners, suitable for driveways, walkways, patios, pool decks, and commercial applications. The interlocking design distributes loads across adjacent pavers, creating a flexible surface that accommodates the freeze-thaw movement inevitable in Ontario's climate without the cracking that plagues poured concrete. Modern interlocking pavers are available in dozens of shapes, colours, and textures — from traditional herringbone brick patterns to contemporary large-format slabs that mimic natural stone. The key to a lasting interlocking installation in the GTA is the base: our clay-heavy soils require deeper granular bases than sandy regions, and proper compaction in lifts is non-negotiable. Buildoreno is an ICPI-certified interlocking paver installer, following the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute's standards for base depth, compaction, edge restraint, and joint sand — the details that separate installations lasting 25+ years from those failing within 5.

How We Work
Design & Material Selection
We design your paver layout with proper patterns for structural integrity and visual appeal. You select from our range of paver styles, colours, and textures with guidance on what works best for your application.
Excavation & Subgrade
We excavate to the required depth — typically 15–18 inches for driveways in GTA clay soils, 10–12 inches for patios. The native subgrade is proof-rolled to identify soft spots that need correction.
Granular Base Installation
Crushed limestone base is installed in 4-inch lifts, each compacted to 98% Proctor density. This engineered base prevents settling and frost heaving — it's the foundation of a lasting installation.
Screeding & Paver Installation
Bedding sand is screeded to a uniform 1-inch depth. Pavers are installed per the designed pattern with consistent joint spacing. Border courses and cuts are completed with precision saws.
Compaction & Joint Sand
The entire surface is plate-compacted to seat pavers into the bedding sand. Polymeric sand is swept into joints and activated with water, binding pavers together and preventing weed growth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Properly installed interlocking pavers last 25–30+ years in GTA conditions. The pavers themselves are virtually indestructible — rated for 8,000+ PSI compressive strength. The most common issues are related to base settlement (from improper installation) or polymeric sand degradation (normal maintenance).
Minimal movement is normal and the interlocking system accommodates it without damage. This is actually an advantage over poured concrete, which cracks under the same forces. Excessive heaving indicates insufficient base depth or poor compaction — not a paver issue.
Polymeric sand is a specially engineered sand that hardens when activated with water, locking pavers together and inhibiting weed growth. It typically lasts 3–5 years before needing top-up in high-traffic areas. This is normal maintenance, not a defect.
Yes. Permeable interlocking pavers allow water to infiltrate through the joints into a stone reservoir beneath, reducing stormwater runoff. Some GTA municipalities offer rebates or reduced development charges for permeable paver installations.
